Reflective Report 2:
On October 21st, 2016, I visited Coffee County High School. Like every time I have gone, it has always been a very positive visit. Coffee County is where I would like to teach at, the environment is always positive and warming at all the schools. My day started out by arriving at Coffee County High School at 8 A.M. I was very calm and excited to see what my day had in store for me. I went on to check in and get my visitors pass from the front desk.
After that, I walked to the gym to meet the Coach. She does multiple things at the high school. She is a weight training teacher, a gym teacher, and practically anywhere else she is needed. Her class started with her telling her students to go change into their gym clothes, she gave them about 10-15 minutes to do that. Once everyone was out and changed she took attendance. After attendance was taken she did her usual warm up which is walking around the gym a few laps and then jogging a few laps. Once they were done with that they went into their lines and went through about 10 different stretches. They got done with their stretches and now were ready to start their gym activity. The class had been learning about tennis this week. They learned all the rules to tennis and correct techniques of their swings.
In the class there were about 24 whites, 5 African Americans, and 2 Hispanics. They went to the tennis courts and each court had a total of four people on each court. They played for over an hour. Once the hour was up the students went inside and went to change out of their gym clothes. She gave them about 20 minutes to do this. They all changed and came in the gym to switch classes. That class ended at 10.
After the gym class had left I went to Coach Sweat’s office to see what she had for the rest of the day. She had stacks of paper all on her desk. It let me know me know just how busy her job was as a grad coach. She had lists of people she had to visit that day, the list consisted of all seniors. One by one I went with her to each classroom to see the students she had to see. She goes to see students one on one to let them know to get their acts together and to pull their grades up or else they might not get to graduate. It took over two hours to get all the people that needed to be talked to. For the last hour with me Coach Spires she talked to me about all the basics to teaching and showed me the day in the life of being a teacher.
My day ended at 1 P.M. I was at the school for a total of five hours. Over all I enjoyed my time there and getting to be in the teaching environment. My teacher was very helpful and was very generous to let me spend the day with her. My experience was positive and a good learning experience.
Summary
I’m glad I had the opportunity to go and see what it is like to be a graduation coach and a gym teacher. From my field work I figured out that being a graduation coach is not the thing I would want to do. It is too stressful and is too much work dealing with kids that don’t care about graduating. I did enjoy the gym class though. It was very easy going and the students did all that they were asked to do. I liked that everything was organized and planned out.
