Lesson 5:

Current Fundamental Issues

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is an internationally standardized assessment that was jointly developed by participating economies and administered to15-year-olds in schools. Four assessments have so far been carried out (in 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2009). Data for the assessment which took place in 2009 was released on 7 December 2010. Tests are typically administered to between 4,500 and 10,000 students in each country.

In this lesson I had to write and answer questions relating the current fundamnetal issues in schools. After I finished the questions I moved onto creating my own research question and answering it using resources online. This lesson was interesting and I learned a lot from it.

In one well-written paragraph, describe the highest performing nation, the lowest performing nation, and how the United States compares. Use the 2012 report for this information. Do NOT just "list" the answers!

The highest performing nation is Shanghai-China. China had a total score of 14.6% higher than all the other countries in the nation. They scored 556 in reading, 575 in science, and 600 in math. From these scores they were placed as the highest performing country in the nation. However, the lowest performing nation is Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan scored 314 in reading, 330 in science, and 331 in math. These scores made them the lowest performing country in the nation. As for the United States, they placed 17th overall. The United States scored 500 in reading, 502 in science, and 487 in math.In another well-written paragraph, describe what nation performs the highest in Math and who performs higher in reading skills, boys or girls (2012 report)?

In another well-written paragraph, describe what nation performs the highest in Math and who performs higher in reading skills, boys or girls (2012 report)?

The article states that North Korea performed the highest in Math and their mean score was 546. This makes them number one over Shanghai-China, Singapore and Hong Kong-China. Girls outperformed the boys in reading skills in every participating country. They outscored the boys by a mean of 39 PISA points. Although girls ranked highest in reading the boys performed better in math. The boys scored by a mean of 12 PISA points over the girls. In science the two genders were equal in the subject.

Describe the performance of single-parent students (2012 report).

Children that have a single-parent they performed five points lower than the ones with two parents. In my opinion, the reasoning for this is that the single parent doesn’t really have enough time with their child. For example, the single-parent could have work that stopped them from being able to see and help their child with school work. Another example could be that the single-parent may not be well educated enough to help their children with their school work.

Concerning performance levels, how important are parents? In other words, can parents make a difference? Describe.

Students with parents scored better on their test than those who do not have two parents. The students with a single-parent scored five points lower on their test. Their child’s teacher does most of the teaching, but a parent help a lot at home and a teacher doesn’t. Parents help their child with their homework, read with them, write with them, and several other things.

Describe what makes a school successful according the 2012 PISA report?

What makes a school successful is that grant greater autonomy to individual schools to design curricula and establish assessment policies, but these school systems do not necessarily allow schools to compete for enrolment. In countries where schools have greater autonomy over what is taught and how students are assessed, students tend to perform better. Another thing is that it creates better discipline for students. It creates a more positive environment for the students, causing them to do better and feel better at school.

As a future classroom teacher, how can you use the information on this web site?

As a future classroom teacher, I believe that this website could help me a lot. It has plenty of information in it that I could use in my classroom. It could help increase test scores of the students, it could help improve discipline of the students and make the students feel safer in the environment. Also, it could help me with comparing the students test scores with the ones on the website.

Do you think the information on this web site is accurate? Why or why not?

Yes, I think the information on the website is accurate. It uses tables and test to show what country did what, what gender performs better, how parents affect their child’s education, and many other things. I don’t think the website would just jump to all of these things if it wasn’t true. I also don’t think someone would put wrong information on a national website.

Based on your analysis of the web site information, do you believe that certain political mandates designed to increase reading and math performance levels (such as the No Child Left Behind law) ARE working or ARE NOT working? Explain.

These programs are used to improve reading and math skills and the only way a child is to perform their best is when they have one on one help from a teacher. I know that No Child Left behind is the federal law authorizing federal spending on programs to support K-12 schooling. Although NCLB covers numerous federal education programs, the law’s requirements for testing, accountability, and school improvement receive the most attention. States must test students in science once in grades 3-5, 6-8, and 10-12. Individual schools, school districts and states must publicly report test results in the aggregate and for specific student subgroups, including low-income students, students with disabilities, English language learners, and major racial and ethnic groups. However, if you don’t meet the requirements of this program then your school has to go through all this stuff and it genuinely brings your school don whether than up.

Summary

I learned a lot from this discussion. For example, the question about how important parents are to the student. I think the parents are extremely helpful because they are the students help outside school. Once that student steps out of class time the teacher can no longer help the student. However, I did find the website hard to use and hard to find information.

Research Question

What do teachers do to help their students succeed?

Research Analysis

Teachers can do many things to help their students succeed. This involves: having high expectations, continually grow in your profession, vary your teaching methods, apply effective classroom management skills and believe in your students. Many teachers know how to help their students succeed and they want their students to succeed. However, there are some teachers out there who don’t care much about their students which comes down to the teachers not knowing how help their students succeed.

In this article explains how research shows that engaging students in the learning process increases attention and focus. It also mentions how this motivates them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills, and promotes meaningful learning experiences. They say that what helps everyone achieve the courses learning objectives are the instructors who adopt a student-centered approach.

Research Summary

I really enjoyed this research analysis. The article had a lot of good information on ‘what do teachers do to help their students succeed?’ It’s good to see what teachers would go through to make sure their students are doing well in school and succeeding. The article had a lot of further information for those who want to look further into the question.
