Lesson 7:
Students in the Education 2130 class were asked to provide feedback to the discussion questions in lesson 7. Students were asked to view the Jacinto 1 and Jacinto 2 podcast article. The podcast tells the story of a young man named Jacinto and his difficult experiences with schools and teachers.
In a couple of paragraphs, descride Jacinto.
Jacinto lived with his grandmother at age sixteen, when he left his second foster home she took him in. Jacinto was an angry person with issues obviously who needed anger management. He was placed in a special ed classroom, which was in Tom McIntyre’s classroom. His mother was a drug user and his dad was an abusive man whom never was a part of his life. Jacinto was a troubled person who just needed a little extra attention and learning in the classroom and guidance from someone who seem to care about him. He was a tall, handsome, muscular 16 year old with a witty but caustic sense of humor.
He was described as the type of person who would wish you a happy thanksgiving by flipping you the bird and telling you to stuff it. Teacher reports indicated that they was a sure sign that he was going to cause trouble when he arrived at school.
When Jacinto told his teacher (Tom McIntyre) to "blank" Off - what was the teacher's response?
Well the first thing he told him was “off” was not a preposition so he would have to rephrase that as well. Even in those trying moments it is important to stand back with a rational mind and see the kid (student) through the behavior. Part of being and becoming a valued teacher of the students is resolving not to take angry comments personally. The students are testing for soft spots. Teachers of students like that need to develop the ability to take it while using that moment to devise a supportive and professional intervention for a younger person who is in crisis. He was testing to see are they different or the same as the other teachers who have given up on him.
What happened to Jacinto?
He wasn’t punished for it, they tried to just steer in a different direction and recognize the good. He knew what he did was wrong. So I guess I could say nothing really happened to him for saying that to the teacher. Which I think something should have because he knew what he was saying and what he did and how disrespectful he was being he just didn’t care.
Based on what happened to Jacinto, why do you think the teacher, Tom McIntyre, wanted to share this story?
Because Jacinto was a person who wanted to belong, wanted to feel like he was like by others. He was trying to get the physical or psychological hug out of Jacinto. He wanted to better him and share his story because he was a good example of neglected students who have emotional or behavioral disorders.
Describe two of the most important (in your opinion) things you learned by listening to this story.
It is sad the things, horrible things that some kids and students would do to belong and be valued in this world. Jacinto wanted support in an unfriendly world and unfortunately the only ones that would accept him were those who had already been cast off themselves by society
When a student tries to test you in your hardest times of teaching, especially when you are spending extra time just to help them out and they lash out and are very ugly or say something ugly you have to know what to do and how to handle that situation. Always stick with your training and the program you are doing. Set them up to do the right thing, prompt them to show the right behavior, and recognize a student positively when they did the right thing. When they did the wrong thing, express disappointment and make it clear that you are disappointed because you know that they are capable of doing much better than that.
Did the community let Jacinto down? Why or why not?
I mean some people gave up on him yes, but not everyone. He had people that helped him and cared but he did what he wanted to do and got into the situations he was in by himself. People can only do so much to help someone, they have to want to do right for themselves as well no matter how much encouragement you give them. Never give up on a student as a teacher because it really can make a difference in someone’s life and you would never know until make you make that difference.
SUMMARY:
If going into this field and dealing with students like Jacinto, I’m sure it can be very challenging at times. Dealing with neglected students who have been through many foster homes and have emotional or/and behavioral disorders need much encouragement in their lives. And they need someone who is going to be positive and uplifting with them. Of course recognize them positively when they do right and good and show disappointment when they do or act wrong or in a bad way.
